Case History: Male with depression

Male with depression, nervous collapse, headaches, anger and exhaustion. Case 626
by N. P. Ball registered Homeopath and Naturopath

Long suffering male aged 40 years. His GP previously diagnosed depression. First seen by me during 2002. He had lost his father in a fatal car accident when 20 years old. He was coerced into taking over the family business. I asked him was he ready for this ?........"No!" he replied.
Health aggravated by business worries and an almost forced marriage, he says, which he then fought mentally for 10 years, leading to use of orthodox medication: Lithium, Triptofan and Phenelazine; plus living on tea and alcohol: 1 bottle of brandy per day plus wine, he said.
He saw psychiatrists in the past and underwent Medical ECT's at ages 28y and again at 35y.
He now sleeps for 80% of the day; his mind went or snapped; feels aggression coming on and is shocked by it. Headaches; brain fag worse for mental activity. Anger for the last 3years.

I offered to help him initially with nutritional treatment as I felt that, in view of his dietary regime, he was suffering from malnutrition and needed to boost his intake of minerals, vitamins and probiotics. This was also necessary in order to maximize the benefits of future homeopathic treatment, which would otherwise certainly have been wasted on him.
Treatment began with supplements (from BioCare), especially those including Iron, Zinc, Vitamin C with magnesium, GLA oils, probiotics, a herbal liver support and my menu sheets.

One month later: A slight improvement had been felt, but "the thought of work made me angry" he said. He fears the accountant who had a hold on him! Does not wish to wake up. He withdraws from the business and the family when pressured. He had taken a useful short break overseas for a rest and a change of scenery.
My next prescription needed to include homeopathy but it could only begin when I felt that he had established a reasonable daily intake of nutrients. Malnutrition hinders or prevents recovery.
I recommended that he continue with the food supplements in order to maximise the benefits of the homeopathic prescription.
Based on his symptoms, especially the mentals and emotions, my selection, by repertorisation, narrowed down to the following: Anacardium, Ignatia, Pulsatilla, Nat Mur, Staphysagria or Opium. After careful study and further consideration the homeopathic prescription I chose was: Natrum Muriaticum. This would help initiate the rebalancing  of his emotions, help him let go of the grief and anger that he felt and also help him reduce irritability, depression and fears etc.

Two years later: He returned to see me saying that he felt much better in himself except that he was always tired and completely exhausted after a week of business activity; also irritable. He had separated from his partner, the depression had improved, anxiety not as bad, it comes and goes and now has some recreation. The GP had him on Prozac and Paroxidine for the past 9 months. My prescription: He was instructed to continue with food supplements, for at least the next 2 months: Iron and Zinc, GLA oils and Vit B Complex with magnesium. My homeopathic prescription: Sulphur, to follow the beneficial influence of the Natrum Mur.

He revisited my practice two and a half years later and seemed to be in relatively good health. My conclusion: a partial cure, however, due to the previous use of the medical ECT's, I felt that a course of cranial osteopathy would help improve his outcome even further.
